As a coordinator for the School of Education where part of my job is training faculty and students on the use of our on-line assessment system, screencasting has been my lifeblood. I use it to demonstrate applications, provide tutorials on building E-Portfolios and individualize evaluation simulations for faculty. It is a terrific way to reach specific groups of audiences who need training and instruction on a particular program, activity or lesson.

"Microcasting" covers a few different areas, but it boils down to providing students the opportunity to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways other than through written text. Podcasting, screencasting, and slidecasting are all variations on a theme: you, too, have something valuable to contribute to the combined sum of human knowledge, and others can and will learn from you.
